Welcome Back to Reading Improvement 2017😁!

Your class for this semester is organized differently from last semester.  Instead of just working on the computer for Reading Plus time, you are also going to be responsible for reading novels of your choice from the in-class library.

Students need both the skill and the will to be good readers.

To build skill, educators have a range of options available to increase student fluency, build vocabulary, and develop comprehension.

But to build will, educators typically have been faced with fewer and much less reliable tools to help increase student confidence and motivation.

Research shows the critical link between student motivation and achievement in reading. That’s why the Emotional domain of reading—which increases student interest, confidence, and motivation—is integrated into the Reading Plus program and by reading self selected texts from our in class library. Reading Plus taps into students’ interests by letting you choose texts from eight high-interest categories. And the InSight assessment specifically measures student motivation, and provides teachers with the personalized data to benchmark and track each student’s progress.

Please take the InSight assessment seriously and choose a novel that REALLY interests you so that you will enjoy your book/s this semester.

My goal is to help you be the BEST reader that you can this semester and to help you increase your reading level by at least 3 years or more.

This is what a typical week will look like for your class this semester:
Monday=Reading Plus
Tuesday=Reading Plus
Wednesday=SSR and Daily Read Log
Thursday=Reading Plus
Friday=Fluency Day and or Non Fiction/Fiction Read Aloud  as a whole class

The Assignments for this week are:
Wednesday=Do Reading Plus and I will call you up one student at a time to choose an SSR book. Fill out Wednesday's section on the new Daily Read Log. Write a prediction, read, then write a summary about what you read.

Thursday=   Do Reading Plus and I will call you up one student at a time to choose an SSR book.
Fill out Wednesday's section on the new Daily Read Log. Write a prediction, read, then write a summary about what you read.

Friday=Complete all Reading Plus assignments for this week.

HW=
1. No Homework this week.  We will start with Home Read Logs again in 2 weeks!

2. Mrs. Kurth will be gone next week from Tuesday January 17-Friday Jan 20, 2017.

Please complete all of your Reading Plus assignments and be on your best behavior for the substitute.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and for your respectful behavior.

Reading History

(Student Writing Sample)

Research suggests that students who read for pleasure do better in school.  Other research suggests that students who were read to as young children are more apt to develop better reading and writing skills and are more likely to develop a  lifelong love for reading.  Discuss your opinion about the validity of these statements in an essay about your own reading background.

Describe your own reading history.  Think about how you felt about reading when you were a child, how those feelings changed or remained the same throughout your education, and describe your current feelings about reading now at this point in your life.  Explain why you feel the way you do about reading and use specific examples from your life to make your point.  In your essay, you may want to answer the following questions:

  • Do you like to read for fun?  If so, what do you read?  If not, why?
  • Have you ever had a bad reading experience?
  • Did you ever feel frustrated or embarrassed when a teacher asked you to read aloud in front of the class?
  • Do you feel like you often daydream or drift away when you flip through pages in a book?
  • Do you feel like your reading can be improved in anyway?

Outline Ideas

Introduction: Catchy opener, background information about you and how you feel or felt about reading throughout your life, Thesis: My reading background has made me into the student/person/reader that I am today.

Body 1: Childhood reading memories

Body 2: Reading experience in Elementary and Middle school

Body 3: How you feel about reading now and why you feel that way

Conclusion: Re-emphasizes your thesis and sum up why you are the person/student/reader that you have become today.
